ECCC R3: Arjun Erigaisi defeats his former coach Mikhalevski, helps Alkaloid win the match
Arjun Erigaisi defeated his former coach, Viktor Mikhalevski to complete his hat-trick at 39th European Club Chess Cup 2024. Mikhalevski went for an ambitious attack which did not work out. The win helped Arjun's team, Alkaloid win the match against Beer Sheva Chess Club. D Gukesh conceded his first draw of the event against Rauf Mamedov. Gukesh was lost at one point. However, he managed to save the game. R Praggnanandhaa finally scored his first win here, against Vugar Asadli. Leon Luke Mendonca held Vidit Gujrathi to a draw. However, Leon's team Vados Chess Club still went down by 3.5-2.5 against Novy Bor Chess Club. Nihal Sarin scored a fantastic win over Tomas Kraus. Both IM Divya Deshmukh and GM R Vaishali drew their respective games. However, their teams - Garuda Ajka BSK and Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo won their respective matches against SuperChess Club 1-3 and MSK Centar 1.5-2.5.

GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (2783), GM R Praggnanandhaa (2746), GM Jorden van Foreest (2697) and GM Javokhir Sindarov (2668) scored the wins over GM Aydin Suleymanli (2637), GM Vugar Asadli (2553), IM Read Samadov (2497) and GM Ulvi Sadikhov (2490) respectively. GM D Gukesh (2794) and GM Bogdan-Daniel Deac (2691) were held to draws by GM Rauf Mamedov (2643) and GM Ulvi Sadikhov (2490) each respectively.

Rauf Mamedov is a very strong player. Last month he was the sole player Ian Nepomniachtchi could not beat at 10th Vugar Gashimov Memorial. Rauf beat Nepo once each in Rapid and Blitz, the other Blitz game ended in a draw. 39.Rxh6+! is a nice tactic Black cannot take as 40.Rxe4 will be winning for White. 39...Kg8 and now White needed to go 40.Rg6 first before taking the d4-rook. 40...Re7 41.Bxd4 Qxd4 42.Rg4 a cross-pin on the e4-knight Nce3 White is not going to get the e4-knight immediately but can maintain a nice pressure on it because moving it would not be easy. The game continued 40.Bxd4 Qxd4 41.Rxa6 Nac3 and the game meandered into a draw. Only at the end, Rauf had a brief opportunity to cause trouble for White. However, the fleeting opportunity did not last long.
Praggnanandhaa - Asadli
Vugar Asadli made an interesting sacrifice 35...Nxg3!? However, he could not follow through correctly. 36.fxg3 Qg5 instead Rxe3 would have been a better choice to bring another piece into action. 37.Qd2 Qxg3 38.Qf2 Rxe3 39.Qxg3 Rxg3 White successfully managed to eliminate any attacking possibilities.
Ideally Black should not lose the endgame as long as he runs his king towards the a8 corner. 51.Kxb2 Kf6 52.Kc3 Ke5 53.Bb7 g3? Black needed to start retreating his king 54.Kd2 Kd4? 53.Ke1!+- and it's over.
