Tata Steel 2024 R11: Vidit scores a fantastic win, Abdusattorov emerges sole leader

by Shahid Ahmed - 27/01/2024

Vidit Gujrathi played a fantastic game to beat Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) in Round 11 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. He mentioned in the post-game interview that it was one of the best moves he ever found. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeated the four-time reigning women's world champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN) to emerge sole leader 7.5/11. D Gukesh played an exciting game against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). It ended in draw which means he is trailing the leader by a half point 7/11. Four players - Anish Giri (NED), Vidit, R Praggnanandhaa and Wei Yi (CHN) are at 6.5/11 each. Leon Luke Mendonca won against Mustafa Yilmaz (TUR) to maintain his pursuit 7.5/11, a full point behind the sole leader - Marc' Andria Maurizzi (FRA). Round 12 starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Photo: Jurriaan Hoefsmit/Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024

Leon Luke Mendonca maintains his chase

"...This is one of the good things about Parham is that he, doesn't matter the tournament situation, he always goes for it and it created a very interesting game. I was pawn down. I had sacrificed it. His king is in the center. It was total chaos. I was very proud of one move which I found which was Qe7. He has just taken my knight. His rooks is hanging, his bishop is hanging. I just play like a normal move Qe7, taking neither of those pieces. I think it's one of the best moves that I have ever found." - Vidit Gujrathi on his win against Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI).

Parham - Vidit: 0-1

Vidit Gujrathi (2742) has never lost a Classical rated game against Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI, 2740). Vidit ensured that fact did not change yesterday.

Position after 14.Ke2

White's position demanded him to play 14.Ke2. The game continued 14...Qa6 15.Nxd4 Nxd4+ 16.exd4 Bd6 17.Nc5 Bxc5 18.dxc5 e5 19.Rd6 Qa5 20.Bxh6 Qxc5 21.Rxf6 Qe7!!

Position after 21...Qe7

"I felt relieved because if I don't find that move, I think I am just worse. I was thinking for like 40-50 minutes, trying to figure out if there is something and I couldn't find anything. I thought I just have a lost position, if I don't find something right now. So I spent the time there and this move struck me like Qe7. After that Black is better. I don't know if it's winning but he collapsed because he had very low time and then my attack was just too strong." - Vidit on the move 21...Qe7 and aftermath.

Gukesh - Firouzja: 0.5-0.5

D Gukesh (2725) and Alireza Firouzja (FRA, 2759) played only two Classical rated games against each other. They scored both a win each. Their third Classical encounter ended in an exciting draw.

Position after 25...Nf4

Gukesh decided to disturb the equilibrium 26.Qxd7 Rxd7 27.Rxd7 Qxf5 28.Rxb7 Nxh3+ 29.Kh1 Nf4 and the game ended in a draw after a complicated battle.
