European Club Cup 2025 R6: World Champion Gukesh beats Arjun Erigaisi, powers SuperChess to sole lead

SuperChess defeated their coleader, Alkaloid to emerge sole leader at 40th European Club Cup 2025 Open. World Champion, D Gukesh scored the key victory over the World no.4, Arjun Erigaisi to ensure his team wins the match 3.5-2.5. SuperChess has taken sole lead 12/12. Turkish Airlines sports club lost to Tuxera Aquaprofit Nagykanizsai Sakk Klub by 2.5-3.5. The latter has moved up to sole second position 11/12. They will inevitably clash with each other in the final round. The defending champion, Novy Bor bounced back with a win over Beer Sheva 5-1. In the Women's event, SuperChess lost to Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo 1.5-2.5. They just need a draw in the final round to become the champion. SuperChess and Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo score a double hat-trick

SuperChess and Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo are the sole leaders of Open and Women's events. They both have won all six of their matches so far and also on the verge of winning the tournament.

Open: SuperChess - Alkaloid: 3.5-2.5

The World Champion, GM D Gukesh (2752) scored the decisive victory for his team SuperChess, over the World no.4, GM Arjun Erigaisi (2773) of Alkaloid. The remaining four games ended in draws. Among them, GM Aravindh Chithambaram (2711) and GM Abhimanyu Puranik (2615) drew against GM Alexey Sarana (2661) and GM Daniel Dardha (2605) respectively.

15...Bd4 16.Rxe7 Bxb6 would have gotten rid of the b6-pawn faster than it happened in the game.

Position after 40.Nc3

The game eventually liquidated into a knight and four pawns vs bishop and three pawns endgame 40...Bxh2/Ke7/h4 would have kept the game going. Instead, 40...Kg7? turned the game in White's favor 41.Ne2+- Bb6 and it became just a matter of time before White won the game.

Novy Bor - Beer Sheva: 4-2

GM Vincent Keymer (2755), GM Vidit Gujrathi (2716), GM David Anton Guijarro (2631) and GM Jonas Buhl Bjerre (2629) scored the wins over IM Eytan Rozen (2510), IM Yannay Ben Ari (2459), GM Alexander Huzman (2521) and IM Alik Vydeslaver (2373) respectively. The remaining two games ended in draws. GM Pentala Harikrishna (2697) was held to a draw by GM Ori Kobo (2480).

Sigil Fund Pardubice got whitewashed by Bayegan Pendik chess sports club 0-6. Among the victors, GM Nihal Sarin (2700) checkmated his opponent, FM Bayarjavkhlan Delgerdalai's (2376) king.

Women: SuperChess - Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo: 1.5-2.5

SuperChess lost to the top seed, Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo by a minimum margin 1.5-2.5. IM Alina Kashlinskaya (2450) scored the key victory for her team against IM Marsel Efroimski (2380). GM Divya Deshmukh (2498) drew against IM Dinara Wagner (2410).

Prizes

The total prize fund is €40000, €26000 in Open and €14000 in Women. The top three prizes in Open are - €8000, €6000 and €4000. For Women, they are - €5500, €3500 and €2000. Individual board prizes on each board €500.

Schedule

Every day round starts at 3 p.m. local time, 5:30 p.m. IST from 19th to 24th October 2025. The final round on 25th October starts 2 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. The seven-round Swiss system tournament has a time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. The tournament will be held in Rhodes, Greece.
