Praggnanandhaa reaches Grand Chess Tour Finals, takes on Fabiano Caruana for the title

R. Praggnanandhaa defeated Vincent Keymer in the Semifinal Match to reach the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals. Praggnanandhaa started the semifinal with a draw in the 1st classical game; in the 2nd classical game, he defeated Keymer to gain the lead. In the Rapid format, Praggnanandhaa won both games and sealed his place in the finals irrespective of the Blitz Games. Total Domination by Pragg!

Praggnanandhaa showed a dominant performance in the semifinals against Vincent Keymer. In the 1st Classical Game, Pragg outplayed Vincent, but he could not convert it to a win, and the game ended in a draw. In the 2nd Classical Game, Vincent had a better position, but then he blundered, and Pragg managed to win the game.

Pragg was in a really bad spot here, and Vincent could have played 35.Ne3 and it's almost over for white, but he played Nd2+ and completely missed Rxd2, Rxd2 and Kc1!. Which traps the rook and forces the exchange with a better endgame for white.

With this win, Pragg secured 6 points and a huge lead going into the rapid section

The Rapid was one-way traffic, as Pragg won both Games and built an unassailable lead to seal the final spot. However, Vincent came back in Blitz, but it was not enough.

About the 2026 GCT Finals

The 2026 Grand Chess Tour season culminates at the Saint Louis Chess Club from August 21–28. Competition runs August 22–27, when the four highest-ranked full-tour players after the regular season contest a knockout tournament for the GCT title.

The Field

The field is set in final Tour standings order: Seed No. 1 Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Seed No. 2 Wesley So, Seed No. 3 Fabiano Caruana, and Seed No. 4 Vincent Keymer. The semifinals pair Praggnanandhaa against Keymer and So against Caruana. The top three finishers will receive invitations to the 2027 Grand Chess Tour.

Prize Fund

The total prize fund is $450,000, distributed as follows: $200,000 for first place, $125,000 for second, $75,000 for third, and $50,000 for fourth.

Format

The GCT Finals is a four-player knockout consisting of two semifinals, a championship match, and a third-place match. Each match includes two Classical games, two Rapid games, and four Blitz games, and every scheduled game is played even if the match result has already been decided.
