Pune Chess Hangouts Finds a Saturday Home at The Habitat
Pune’s chess scene just levelled up! Pune Chess Hangouts is launching a brand-new weekly fixture: a dedicated Saturday Chess Club at The Habitat in Mundhwa, running every weekend from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This gives the city its very first consistent Saturday evening hub for chess enthusiasts. Founded in early 2024 by Sanjana Desai and Chaitanya Bidkar, Pune Chess Hangouts started as a modest gathering of a few players. Under Sanjana’s leadership as Founder and Community Head, it has rapidly expanded into one of the city's most vibrant chess hubs, boasting over 1,000 members and a track record of more than 250 weekend meetups across Pune.
A New Saturday Tradition, Built With The Habitat
On a Saturday evening in Pune, walk into The Habitat, and you might find dozens of chessboards spread across the room, players deep in their games, and strangers sitting across from each other and starting a game. There is no big entry barrier, no need to know someone beforehand, and no pressure to prove anything. You simply show up, find a board, and play. That is exactly what Pune Chess Hangouts (PCH) and The Habitat are trying to build: a place where chess belongs to everyone.
The Saturday Chess Club is a collaboration between Pune Chess Hangouts, the community, and The Habitat, the venue hosting it. The idea grew out of Balraj Ghai's vision for The Habitat: a space that welcomes everyone from casual players dropping in for the first time to titled professionals stopping by for a serious game. That vision found its way to Pune Chess Hangouts through IA Deepti Shidore, a friend of the community who was part of the organising team for the GM Round Robin tournament held at the venue in early July. One conversation about the community's story led to a single call, then a meeting, and by the end of it, The Habitat had agreed to become PCH's permanent Saturday home.
Balraj isn't a distant host either. He regularly joins in for games himself whenever his schedule allows, and both sides share the same goal: making The Habitat the chess spot in Pune.
What to Expect on a Saturday Evening
Walk in on a Saturday, and you'll find a room that comfortably holds around 80 players, though there's space to grow well beyond that for bigger events. The Habitat has set aside its canteen specifically for this, and the staff has earned a reputation among the community for how warmly they welcome everyone through the door.
The crowd is exactly the mix that Pune Chess Hangouts has always drawn: complete beginners sitting across the board from FIDE-rated players, kids playing alongside seniors, nobody worrying too much about the clock or the result. It's the kind of evening when a game pauses so someone can grab a snack, when a blunder gets laughed off rather than replayed with regret, and when the conversation matters as much as the position on the board.
The format will keep evolving. Once the community has settled into the new venue and rhythm, Pune Chess Hangouts plans to roll out a structured monthly calendar featuring rated tournaments, team events, chess variants, and other formats designed to keep every Saturday a little different. Rated tournaments are already in the pipeline, and Balraj intends to bring the GM Round Robin back to The Habitat roughly every three months. The most recent edition carried real weight for Indian chess: it was where Aswath earned the title of India's 98th Grandmaster, a strong early sign of what the venue can host.
Why This Matters for Pune
Beyond the milestone for Pune Chess Hangouts, the Saturday Chess Club gives the city something it hasn't quite had before: a reliable evening destination where anyone can walk in, meet fellow chess enthusiasts, play a few games, grab a bite, and leave feeling like part of a community, no invitation or prior connection required. Three Saturdays in, that's exactly the feeling players have been describing.
For now, the format stays simple while the community gets used to the new venue and timing. Once that settles, the plan is to introduce a structured monthly calendar that mixes rated tournaments, team events, chess variants, and other formats to keep things fresh. Rated tournaments are already in the works, and Balraj plans to bring the GM Round Robin back to the venue roughly every three months.
