5th Shenzhen Masters 2024 R3: Arjun Erigaisi annihilates Anish Giri

by Shahid Ahmed - 03/03/2024

Arjun Erigaisi bounced back with a victory over the World no.5 Anish Giri (NED) in the third round of 5th Shenzhen Masters 2024. This is his biggest victory in a Classical rated game against a 2750+ opponent. He once again crossed 2750 in the live ratings. Earlier, he did after winning against Xiangyu Xu (CHN) in Round 1. Speaking of repetitions, Giri once again blundered and allowed a combination which ended things for him in second consecutive game. Yangyi Yu (CHN) defeated Vladislav Artemiev after the latter made a technical error in a rook endgame which ideally should have ended in a draw. Thus, Yangyi emerged sole leader 2.5/3. Xiangzhi Bu (CHN), Daniil Dubov and Arjun are at 2/3 each. Today is a rest day. Round 4 starts tomorrow 4th March at 2 p.m. local time, 11:30 a.m. IST. Photos: Organizer/Liang Ziming

Giri - Arjun: 0-1

Anish Giri (NED, 2762) faced Arjun Erigaisi (2738) only once in a Classical rated game last year at 85th Tata Steel Masters. It ended in a draw. They had the same color in their second encounter. The sharp battle where both players were attacking each other's king on the opposite flanks took a sudden turn.

Position after 33.Qxh3??

Once again, Giri blundered 33.Qxh3?? Can you find out the winning continuation for Black which Arjun executed in the game?

Anish Giri suffered his second loss in-a-row

Yangyi - Artemiev

Position after 40.b5

With correct play, this game should end up in a draw. However, things are not always easy in a practical game. 40...g5 41.fxg5 hxg5 42.hxg5 Kg7 should have been fine for Black. Instead, 40...Kg7? turned things sideways 41.b6 Rb5 42.g3 g5 43.h5 and White went on to win the game. Find out the difference.
