The Chennai Grand Masters is back with support from the Tamil Nadu Government. After launching this event successfully in 2023, the tournament is set to make an even bigger impact this year. Chennai will once again host this prestigious competition from 5th November to 11th November. The event will occur in two sections - Masters and Challengers. Masters section:
The lineup for the 2nd edition of the Chennai Grandmasters is packed with top-tier talent: Arjun Erigaisi (2797), Levon Aronian (2738), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2735), Vidit Gujrathi (2726), Parham Maghsoodloo (2719), Alexey Sarana (2717), Amin Tabatabaei (2702), and Aravindh Chithambaram (2698). With an impressive average rating of 2729 according to the October rating list, this year’s tournament promises intense competition. Player ratings will be updated with the November list before the event kicks off.
This event is important to earn the FIDE Circuit points. Players' performance could significantly impact their standings and would contribute to securing a coveted spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.
The following FIDE circuit points will be at stake at the event:
Sole 1st - 24.5
Joint 1st - 22.3
2nd - 17.8
3rd - 15.6
Challengers section:
The Challengers section is a new addition to the Chennai Grandmasters. It is created to give India’s rising chess talents a chance to compete at a high level. The winner earns a spot in next year’s Masters. This year’s lineup includes Raunak Sadhwani (2659), Abhimanyu Puranik (2639), Karthikeyan Murali (2624), Leon Mendonca (2622), Pranav V. (2609), Pranesh M. (2580), Harika Dronavalli (2493), and R. Vaishali (2486). All these talents have the potential to become world-class players.
Prizes:
The total prize fund in the Masters section is Rs.50 lakh, while the prize fund in the Challengers is Rs.20 lakh
